Newly Habituated Gorilla Groups in Uganda 2026
Newly habituated gorilla groups Uganda 2026 expand the total number of trekking permits available in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Uganda currently has over 20 habituated gorilla families across its four Bwindi sectors and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Understanding the habituation process helps you choose whether a newly habituated group suits your visit.
How Gorilla Habituation Works
The Two to Three Year Process
Gorilla habituation takes two to three years of daily contact between rangers and a wild gorilla family. Teams of researchers and trackers visit the group every morning. Gorillas initially flee or charge. Consistent, non-threatening exposure gradually reduces fear responses until the family tolerates human presence at close range.
Who Carries Out Habituation in Uganda
Uganda Wildlife Authority leads all gorilla habituation programs in Uganda. Bwindi Conservation Trust and international research organisations support the process. Funding from gorilla permits and tourism revenue finances habituation teams. Each new family represents years of conservation investment before generating any permit income.
What to Expect From a Newly Habituated Family
Behaviour Differences vs Established Families
Newly habituated families are less predictable than older groups. Gorillas may move away from the group more quickly. Silverbacks may display more aggressively as a warning response. Rangers managing newer families are highly experienced at reading these signals and keeping visitors at safe distances.
Trekking Experience With New Groups
Trek duration to newly habituated families is less predictable than with established groups. Your one-hour encounter still applies once you reach the gorillas. Newer families sometimes offer wilder, more natural behaviours that experienced safari visitors find more authentic than encounters with highly familiar groups.

Rushaga Sector Families
Rushaga sector in southern Bwindi has the highest concentration of habituated gorilla families — up to nine groups as of 2026. This sector has seen the most new habituations in recent years. African Wild Trekkers maintains current information on family availability and status for all Rushaga groups.
Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo Families
Buhoma has three habituated families including the long-established Mubare group. Ruhija has two to three families with limited permit numbers. Nkuringo has one family that requires the most challenging trek to reach. African Wild Trekkers confirms family availability when building your itinerary.
Why New Families Matter for Conservation
Expanding Uganda’s Mountain Gorilla Population
Mountain gorilla numbers have grown from under 300 in the 1980s to over 1,000 today. Habituation programs play a direct role in this recovery. Tourism revenue funds anti-poaching teams, ranger salaries and community programs that reduce forest encroachment pressure on gorilla habitat.
How Your Permit Supports Habituation
Twenty percent of each $800 gorilla permit goes directly to local communities surrounding Bwindi. These payments reduce the economic incentive to poach or clear forest land. Every permit you purchase contributes directly to funding the next generation of gorilla habituation programs in Uganda.
