14 Day Uganda Safari: Why This Is the Ideal Length

A 14 day Uganda safari gives you enough time to experience every major wildlife region without rushing any single park. Uganda’s best parks spread across the country’s western arc and reaching each one properly requires transit days. Fourteen days lets you absorb Murchison Falls in the north, Kibale’s primates in the west, Queen Elizabeth’s big game diversity and Bwindi’s gorillas in the deep southwest. Mid-range total costs approximately $7,000 to $10,000 per person excluding international flights.

14 Day Uganda Safari Days 1 to 2: Entebbe and Kampala Orientation

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport. Spend the first evening in Entebbe near the lake — visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre for rescued animals or take a sunset boat on Lake Victoria. Day 2 gives you Kampala orientation: Kasubi Tombs UNESCO site, craft market shopping and an introduction to Uganda’s food culture. This orientation phase prevents culture shock and prepares you for the parks ahead.

14 Day Uganda Safari Days 3 to 4: Murchison Falls

Drive north from Kampala toward Murchison Falls National Park — approximately 5 hours. Stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route, the only place in Uganda where you walk with wild white rhinos. This stop adds 2 hours to the journey but delivers close-range rhino encounters on foot. Arrive at Murchison by late afternoon. Day 4 covers the north bank game drive at dawn (lions, Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, oribis) followed by the Nile boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls — the most powerful watercourse on earth pushing through a 7-metre cleft.

14 Day Uganda Safari Day 5: Budongo Forest Chimp Tracking

Budongo Forest sits just 30km south of Murchison Falls main gate. This 793 square kilometre mahogany forest holds approximately 700 chimpanzees. The permit costs $90 per person — significantly cheaper than Kibale’s $250. Spend the morning tracking chimps along the Royal Mile, a famous straight forest path renowned for its bird species. Drive to Kibale in the afternoon — approximately 5 to 6 hours total for this travel day.

14 Day Uganda Safari Days 6 to 7: Kibale Forest

Day 6 brings the full Kibale chimp trekking experience at $250 per permit from Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. Day 7 covers Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary in the morning at $10 — grey-cheeked mangabeys, olive colobus, red-tailed monkeys and 200+ bird species make this one of Uganda’s best-value wildlife hours. Consider the Kibale night walk at $20 on the evening of Day 6 if energy permits — pottos and bush babies reward night visitors.

14 Day Uganda Safari Days 8 to 9: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Drive from Kibale south to Queen Elizabeth — approximately 4 hours. Day 8 afternoon: Kazinga Channel boat cruise at $30. This 40km channel between Lake George and Lake Edward holds over 2,000 hippos — one of Africa’s highest concentrations. Day 9: Kasenyi Plains game drive at dawn for lions and elephants, then drive south through the park toward Ishasha sector for tree-climbing lions. The fig trees in Ishasha hold lions lounging in branches — a behavior found in only two locations worldwide.

14 Day Uganda Safari Days 10 to 11: Bwindi Gorilla Trekking

Day 10: drive from Ishasha to Bwindi — approximately 2 hours. Briefing, rest and cultural walk option. Day 11: gorilla trekking at $800 per permit. Pre-trek briefing at 7am. Groups of maximum eight enter the forest. Spend exactly one hour with the habituated gorilla family. The afternoon Batwa Trail at $30 transforms this into the most culturally and emotionally complete day of the entire safari.

14 Day Uganda Safari Days 12 to 13: Mgahinga and Lake Bunyonyi

Day 12: drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for golden monkey trekking at $100 per person. These vivid orange-and-black primates live only in the Virunga bamboo zone. Day 13: Lake Bunyonyi rest day — canoe between the 29 islands, swim in bilharzia-free water at 1,962m altitude, watch grey-crowned cranes from a dugout and simply decompress after an intense safari.

14 Day Uganda Safari Day 14: Jinja Rafting or Entebbe Departure

The route from Bwindi region to Entebbe passes approximately 2 hours from Jinja. Guests with afternoon or evening flights add a Nile white-water rafting session in Jinja — $125 to $145 for a full day of Grade 3 to 5 rapids. Those with early departures drive directly to Entebbe, a 7 to 8 hour journey from Kabale. Domestic flight options reduce road time: Entebbe to Kisoro costs approximately $300 one way, and Entebbe to Pakuba near Murchison costs approximately $350.
