7 Day Uganda Itinerary: The Compact Classic Circuit
The 7 day Uganda itinerary delivers Uganda’s three signature wildlife experiences — chimpanzees, big game and mountain gorillas — within the shortest feasible timeframe. Busy travelers with limited leave find this itinerary achieves the Uganda essentials without wasted days. Mid-range cost runs approximately $3,500 to $5,500 per person excluding international flights and the $800 gorilla permit.
7 Day Uganda Itinerary Day 1: Arrive Entebbe, Drive to Kibale
International flights into Entebbe typically arrive morning or midday. Collect your safari vehicle and driver and begin the 5 to 6 hour drive northwest to Kibale Forest. Depart Entebbe by noon to reach Kibale before dark. The drive crosses the Equator at a marked crossing point 25km south of Kampala — a quick photo stop costs 10 minutes and adds character to the journey. Arrive Kibale by 6pm. Dinner and early rest before the chimp trek tomorrow.
7 Day Uganda Itinerary Day 2: Chimp Trekking and Bigodi
The 7:30am chimp trek begins from Kanyanchu Visitor Centre with a UWA ranger. Your $250 permit allows one hour with a habituated chimp community in Africa’s highest-density primate forest. Afternoon at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary costs $10 and takes 2 to 3 hours. Grey-cheeked mangabeys call from the tall trees, red-tailed monkeys move through the mid-canopy and L’Hoest’s monkeys forage on the ground. Over 200 bird species complete the afternoon.
7 Day Uganda Itinerary Day 3: Drive to Queen Elizabeth, Kazinga Channel
Depart Kibale at 7am. The 4 hour drive south reaches Queen Elizabeth National Park by midday. Check in and take the 2pm Kazinga Channel boat cruise at $30 per person. Two hours on this 40km channel delivers Uganda’s most wildlife-dense single experience — hippo pods basking within metres, crocodiles on sand bars, elephant herds at the waterline and a rolling spectacle of waterbirds. This cruise alone justifies including Queen Elizabeth in the 7-day itinerary.
7 Day Uganda Itinerary Day 4: Kasenyi Game Drive, Drive to Bwindi
Rise at 5:30am for the Kasenyi Plains game drive. Lions patrol the open grassland before sunrise — this dawn window produces the highest big cat sighting rates in the park. Uganda kob display in breeding leks visible from the vehicle. Buffalo herds move to water. Depart the park by 10am and drive south toward Bwindi — approximately 4 hours including the Ishasha sector road. Arrive Bwindi by late afternoon. Attend the gorilla briefing if offered the evening before your trek.
7 Day Uganda Itinerary Day 5: Gorilla Trekking at Bwindi
The $800 gorilla permit makes Day 5 the emotional peak of the 7-day itinerary. Pre-trek briefing at 7am at the park gate sets rules: no flash photography, maintain 7 metres from the gorillas, no food visible, no illness within 48 hours. Groups enter the forest at 7:30am. Average trek duration runs 2 to 6 hours. The one-hour time with the gorilla family passes faster than any hour of your life. Most first-time gorilla trekkers describe it as transformative beyond expectations.
7 Day Uganda Itinerary Day 6: Cultural Visit or Lake Bunyonyi Rest Day
Day 6 serves as a physical and emotional recovery after the gorilla trek intensity. The Batwa Trail near Buhoma costs $30 and takes 3 to 4 hours with Batwa elders demonstrating ancestral forest skills. Alternatively, drive 45 minutes to Lake Bunyonyi at 1,962m altitude. Hire a dugout canoe for $10 to $15 per hour and paddle between the 29 islands in cool mountain air. The lake offers safe swimming, excellent birding and complete serenity.
7 Day Uganda Itinerary Day 7: Return to Entebbe
The drive from Bwindi to Entebbe takes 7 to 8 hours. Depart by 6am to reach Entebbe for evening international flights. The route passes through Kabale, Mbarara and the main Masaka–Kampala highway. A mid-journey break in Mbarara at a hotel restaurant allows a proper lunch stop. Consider a charter flight from Kisoro airstrip near Bwindi to Entebbe — approximately $300 per person one way — saving 6 hours of road time and allowing a noon departure. Seven days represents the absolute minimum for a gorillas-plus-chimps Uganda safari. Adding Murchison Falls requires 9 to 10 days.
