Rwanda Gorilla Permit 2026: The Complete Booking Guide
The Rwanda gorilla permit 2026 price is $1,500 per person for foreign non-residents. Rwanda Development Board sets the permit price and issues all gorilla trekking permits for Volcanoes National Park. Demand consistently outpaces supply in peak season, making early booking critical for preferred dates.
Permit Cost Breakdown
Standard Permit Fee
Foreign non-residents pay $1,500 per person for a standard Rwanda gorilla permit in 2026. This entitles you to one 60-minute encounter with a habituated gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park. The fee includes ranger guide charges and park entry. No discount applies for families, groups or returning visitors.
Platinum Gorilla Experience
Rwanda’s Platinum Gorilla Experience permits allow extended time with a gorilla family beyond the standard hour. These cost additional fees on top of the base permit and are extremely limited. African Wild Trekkers confirms current Platinum availability and pricing on request. Most visitors find the standard permit completely satisfying.
How to Book a Rwanda Gorilla Permit
Booking Through African Wild Trekkers
African Wild Trekkers submits gorilla permit applications to Rwanda Development Board directly on your behalf. We confirm availability for your travel dates before requesting any deposit. Your permit is issued in your name and confirmed in writing before you book flights. This process eliminates the risk of arriving in Rwanda without a secured permit.
Booking Directly With Rwanda Development Board
Direct bookings are accepted through the RDB website at rdb.rw. Full payment is required upfront by card. Direct bookings do not include lodge accommodation, transfers or any other itinerary elements. African Wild Trekkers integrates your permit into a full package with accommodation, meals and transport included in one confirmed price.
When to Book Your Rwanda Gorilla Permit
Peak Season Lead Times
June through September permits sell out four to six months in advance. Book by January for a July or August trek. December is also popular and fills three to four months ahead. Waiting until two months before peak season dates risks losing your preferred window entirely.
Shoulder and Low Season Availability
March, April and November have better availability. Two to four weeks’ notice can sometimes secure permits in these months. Low season delivers smaller groups, lower lodge rates and a more intimate forest experience. The gorillas remain fully accessible regardless of rainfall levels outside the forest.
Tips From Experience on Gorilla Day
What Happens on Trek Day
All trekking groups assemble at Kinigi park headquarters at 7am. Rwanda Development Board assigns each group to a specific gorilla family based on daily ranger tracking reports. Rangers brief all groups on rules and conduct before departure. Your assigned ranger guide leads the trek from trailhead to gorilla location and back.
Physical Preparation
Volcanoes treks range from 45 minutes to four hours depending on gorilla family location on the day. Prepare for steep volcanic slopes on families higher up the mountain. Hire a porter from the park — they cost around $20 per trek and significantly ease the physical challenge on uphill sections. Poles and gaiters are recommended by all Rwanda ranger teams.
