Rwanda + Uganda: The Ultimate 10-Day Primate Safari Itinerary
A Rwanda Uganda 10 day primate safari is the most comprehensive primate wildlife experience available anywhere on earth in a single trip. The itinerary combines mountain gorilla trekking in both Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzee trekking in Uganda’s Kibale Forest and golden monkey trekking in Rwanda’s Virunga bamboo zones. No single-country trip — however well designed — can match the primate diversity this cross-border circuit delivers. The two countries’ complementary strengths in terms of species access, forest character, lodge quality and cultural experience combine to produce a safari that is genuinely greater than the sum of its parts.
Why Combining Uganda and Rwanda Delivers More
Different Gorilla Experiences in Each Country
Mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park are not interchangeable experiences — they are complementary ones that together give you a complete picture of mountain gorilla ecology and the range of habitats these animals use. Bwindi is older, denser ancient primary forest with steep volcanic terrain that feels genuinely wild and physically demanding — a forest that has never been cleared, shaped by millions of years of equatorial evolution with a canopy so thick it filters daylight to a green twilight below. Volcanoes National Park has sections of bamboo forest at lower elevations and more open Hagenia woodland higher up the volcanic slopes, producing a different visual and atmospheric experience for the gorilla encounter. Trekking gorillas in both forests within the same trip reveals aspects of mountain gorilla biology and habitat that no single-country itinerary can show you.
Adding Chimpanzees and Golden Monkeys
Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda holds the highest density of chimpanzees anywhere in Africa — over 1,000 individuals across a single forest system alongside 12 other primate species including red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabeys and olive baboons. A morning chimpanzee trek at Kibale produces an encounter that is completely unlike gorilla trekking — noisier, faster, more chaotic and energetic, with chimps moving rapidly through the canopy and interacting in complex social dynamics that reveal the behaviours our closest evolutionary relatives share with us. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park adds golden monkey trekking in the bamboo forest zones — vivid orange-gold Albertine Rift endemic primates found only in the Virunga volcanic belt of Uganda, Rwanda and DRC. A 10-day circuit combining all three experiences covers gorillas, our closest great ape relative, and one of Africa’s most striking endemic primates in a single connected journey.
The 10-Day Itinerary Day by Day
Days One to Three: Arrival and Kibale Forest
Day one arrives at Entebbe International Airport with a transfer to your Fort Portal area lodge for a Kibale Forest base — the drive takes four to five hours through Uganda’s agricultural highlands and tea estate country. Day two is chimpanzee trekking day in Kibale Forest National Park — a 5:30am briefing, tracker-led approach to the habituated community and a full one-hour encounter with the Kibale chimp groups, followed by an afternoon Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk that adds over 200 bird species and additional primate species to your day. Day three transfers from Kibale south to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — six hours of spectacular road travel through the Rwenzori foothills, passing Lake George and crossing into Uganda’s southwestern highlands — arriving in time for a lodge dinner and a pre-trek briefing from your ranger team.
Days Four and Five: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Day four is your Uganda gorilla trekking day — a 7am briefing at the Bwindi sector headquarters where ranger teams assign groups to their habituated gorilla family for the day, followed by the trek through Bwindi’s ancient forest to the family’s current location. The one-hour encounter begins the moment the lead ranger gives the signal — from that point, an hour unfolds at whatever pace the gorillas set, watching them feed, rest, play and interact with complete indifference to your presence. Day five can be used for a second gorilla trek if you have booked a second permit, a Batwa Pygmy cultural experience near Bwindi that provides profound context for the forest conservation story, or an afternoon transfer southwest to the Uganda-Rwanda border crossing at Katuna-Cyanika for an overnight in Musanze, Rwanda’s gorilla base town.
Days Six to Ten: Rwanda Circuit
Days Six and Seven: Volcanoes National Park
Day six in Rwanda begins with golden monkey trekking at Volcanoes National Park — a 7am departure from Kinigi headquarters for the bamboo forest zone where two habituated golden monkey communities of 30 to 60 individuals live among the stands of giant bamboo. The encounter lasts one hour and produces some of the most photogenic primate images of the entire 10-day trip, with vivid orange-gold fur catching morning light in bamboo clearings. An afternoon Iby’Iwacu cultural village visit follows — spending time with the former-poacher community program that employs over 100 community members in traditional dance, craft making and cultural guiding. Day seven is Rwanda gorilla trekking day at Volcanoes National Park — the same one-hour encounter format as Bwindi but in a different forest type and with a different family, providing a genuinely new perspective on mountain gorilla behaviour and habitat preference.
Days Eight to Ten: Kigali, Culture and Departure
Day eight transfers from Musanze to Kigali — two and a half hours on excellent roads — with an afternoon visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial that gives Rwanda’s extraordinary recovery story the specific human detail it deserves before departure. Day nine is free for Kigali exploration — Kimironko market for crafts and local food, the Rwanda Art Museum, Nyamirambo neighbourhood walking tour and a final dinner at one of Kigali’s better restaurants. Day ten is departure from Kigali International Airport. The itinerary uses private vehicles throughout both countries with no public transport at any stage, and African Wild Trekkers manages all permit applications, lodge bookings and border logistics from a single booking process.
Booking and Cost Information
Permit Coordination Across Two Countries
The most complex part of a combined Uganda-Rwanda gorilla safari is coordinating permit applications in two different national park systems simultaneously. Uganda gorilla permits come from Uganda Wildlife Authority at $800 per person. Rwanda gorilla permits come from Rwanda Development Board at $1,500 per person. Both require advance booking, confirmation in the visitor’s name and payment before the trek date. African Wild Trekkers manages permit applications in both countries as a single coordinated process — you submit one enquiry, we handle both permit systems, and both permits are confirmed in writing before your lodge bookings are finalised. This coordination eliminates the risk of permit-lodge date misalignment that affects some independent bookers.
Total Cost and What Is Included
A mid-range 10-day Uganda-Rwanda combined primate safari including one Uganda gorilla permit at $800, one Rwanda gorilla permit at $1,500, one chimpanzee permit at $200, one golden monkey permit at $100, all mid-range lodge accommodation, full-board meals throughout, private 4×4 vehicles in both countries, all park entry fees and 24/7 in-country support costs approximately $6,500 to $8,500 per person. Luxury versions of the same itinerary with Singita Kwitonda in Rwanda and top Bwindi lodges in Uganda cost $10,000 to $14,000 per person. All prices are all-inclusive from international airport arrival to departure and no additional expenses appear during the trip beyond personal spending on craft purchases and optional porter hire.

How Far in Advance to Book
Combined Uganda-Rwanda gorilla permits sell out fastest in peak season — June through September — when both countries’ permits are in highest demand simultaneously. Book at least four to six months ahead for peak season combined itineraries. African Wild Trekkers checks availability in both countries immediately on your enquiry and advises on the earliest available combined permit dates that align with your travel window.
Official Permit Costs and Booking Process
Uganda Wildlife Authority charges $800 per person per gorilla permit. Rwanda Development Board charges $1,500 per person. We submit applications directly through official channels in both countries. Both permits are confirmed in your name in writing before any lodge is booked, any flight is confirmed or any deposit beyond the initial holding deposit is requested. Your permits are the most critical booking in the entire itinerary and we treat them accordingly.
