Day two is chimpanzee trekking day in Kibale Forest National Park — a 5:30am briefing, tracker-led approach to the habituated community and a full one-hour encounter with the Kibale chimp groups, followed by an afternoon Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk that adds over 200 bird species and additional primate species to your day. Day three transfers from Kibale south to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — six hours of spectacular road travel through the Rwenzori foothills, passing Lake George and crossing into Uganda’s southwestern highlands — arriving in time for a lodge dinner and a pre-trek briefing from your ranger team.
Days Four and Five: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Day four is your Uganda gorilla trekking day — a 7am briefing at the Bwindi sector headquarters where ranger teams assign groups to their habituated gorilla family for the day, followed by the trek through Bwindi’s ancient forest to the family’s current location. The one-hour encounter begins the moment the lead ranger gives the signal — from that point, an hour unfolds at whatever pace the gorillas set, watching them feed, rest, play and interact with complete indifference to your presence. Day five can be used for a second gorilla trek if you have booked a second permit, a Batwa Pygmy cultural experience near Bwindi that provides profound context for the forest conservation story, or an afternoon transfer southwest to the Uganda-Rwanda border crossing at Katuna-Cyanika for an overnight in Musanze, Rwanda’s gorilla base town.
Days Six to Ten: Rwanda Circuit
Days Six and Seven: Volcanoes National Park
Day six in Rwanda begins with golden monkey trekking at Volcanoes National Park — a 7am departure from Kinigi headquarters for the bamboo forest zone where two habituated golden monkey communities of 30 to 60 individuals live among the stands of giant bamboo. How Far in Advance to Book
Combined Uganda-Rwanda gorilla permits sell out fastest in peak season — June through September — when both countries’ permits are in highest demand simultaneously. Book at least four to six months ahead for peak season combined itineraries. Official Permit Costs and Booking Process
Uganda Wildlife Authority charges $800 per person per gorilla permit. Rwanda Development Board charges $1,500 per person. We submit applications directly through official channels in both countries. Both permits are confirmed in your name in writing before any lodge is booked, any flight is confirmed or any deposit beyond the initial holding deposit is requested. Your permits are the most critical booking in the entire itinerary and we treat them accordingly.
