Rwanda + Kenya Safari: Gorillas in the Mist Then Lions on the Mara

Rwanda + Kenya Safari: Two East Africa Icons in One Trip

A Rwanda Kenya safari gorillas Maasai Mara combination delivers two of East Africa’s most celebrated wildlife experiences in a single connected itinerary. Rwanda gives you mountain gorilla trekking — the world’s most intimate wildlife encounter. Kenya gives you the Great Migration, Big Five game viewing and the Maasai Mara’s sweeping savanna landscapes. Together, these two countries cover the full range of what East Africa offers at its absolute best.

Why This Combination Works So Well

Complementary Wildlife, Not Competing

Rwanda and Kenya do not compete for the same wildlife experience — they deliver completely different ones. A gorilla encounter in Bwindi or Volcanoes is personal, forest-based and intensely intimate. A Mara game drive is expansive, open and built around sheer scale. Doing both in one trip means you experience wildlife at both its most intimate and its most spectacular. Most visitors who complete the Rwanda-Kenya circuit describe it as the definitive East Africa trip precisely because neither experience repeats the other.

Kigali to Nairobi Flight Options

RwandAir operates direct flights between Kigali and Nairobi several times per week, making the cross-country transfer fast and straightforward. The flight takes approximately two hours. Connecting through Nairobi or Kigali also gives useful hub access for international departures. African Wild Trekkers coordinates all internal East Africa flights as part of combined itinerary packages, so you never deal with separate flight bookings across two countries independently.

How to Build the Itinerary

Days One to Five: Rwanda Gorilla Circuit

Start in Kigali with one arrival night before driving to Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. Allow two nights at a lodge near Volcanoes for gorilla trekking on day three and golden monkey trekking or a Dian Fossey trail hike on day four. Day five transfers back to Kigali for a Kigali Genocide Memorial visit and an evening departure flight to Nairobi. This five-day Rwanda section gives you the essential gorilla trekking experience without overextending a short Rwanda visit.

Days Six to Twelve: Kenya Maasai Mara Circuit

Arrive Nairobi on day six and transfer the same day or next morning to the Maasai Mara by road or charter flight — the road takes five to six hours, the charter 45 minutes. Allow three full game drive days in the Mara to cover the full range of wildlife activity including river crossing sightings from July through October. Add Amboseli National Park for two nights on the way back to Nairobi for elephant herds under Kilimanjaro’s views. End in Nairobi with an optional David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust visit before departure. The total 12-day circuit covers gorillas, primates, Big Five, migration and one of Africa’s finest elephant destinations.

Timing for Maximum Impact

Aligning Gorillas and the Migration

The ideal months for this combined trip are July and August. Rwanda’s dry season runs from June through September, giving excellent gorilla trekking conditions. The Great Migration wildebeest crossings at the Mara River peak from July through October. Booking both countries in the July-August window gives you dry trails in Rwanda and active river crossings in Kenya without compromise on either experience. Permits for this window sell out months ahead in both countries — book at least four to six months in advance.

Alternative Timing Options

December through January offers a shorter dry window in Rwanda with excellent gorilla permit availability and good Mara game viewing, though migration crossings are absent in Kenya at this time of year. The Maasai Mara still delivers exceptional Big Five year-round — lions, leopards and elephants are resident rather than migratory. African Wild Trekkers advises on the optimal timing for your specific travel window when you enquire, balancing permit availability, migration season and your departure dates from home.
