How to Build the Itinerary
Days One to Five: Rwanda Gorilla Circuit
Start in Kigali with one arrival night before driving to Musanze and Volcanoes National Park. Allow two nights at a lodge near Volcanoes for gorilla trekking on day three and golden monkey trekking or a Dian Fossey trail hike on day four. Day five transfers back to Kigali for a Kigali Genocide Memorial visit and an evening departure flight to Nairobi. Days Six to Twelve: Kenya Maasai Mara Circuit
Arrive Nairobi on day six and transfer the same day or next morning to the Maasai Mara by road or charter flight — the road takes five to six hours, the charter 45 minutes. Allow three full game drive days in the Mara to cover the full range of wildlife activity including river crossing sightings from July through October. Add Amboseli National Park for two nights on the way back to Nairobi for elephant herds under Kilimanjaro’s views. The ideal months for this combined trip are July and August. Rwanda’s dry season runs from June through September, giving excellent gorilla trekking conditions. The Great Migration wildebeest crossings at the Mara River peak from July through October. Booking both countries in the July-August window gives you dry trails in Rwanda and active river crossings in Kenya without compromise on either experience. Permits for this window sell out months ahead in both countries — book at least four to six months in advance.
Alternative Timing Options
December through January offers a shorter dry window in Rwanda with excellent gorilla permit availability and good Mara game viewing, though migration crossings are absent in Kenya at this time of year. The Maasai Mara still delivers exceptional Big Five year-round — lions, leopards and elephants are resident rather than migratory.
