The Kigali Bus Service runs fixed routes across the city on a metered fare basis. This makes urban Kigali significantly easier to navigate by public transport than most African capital cities where informal minibus routes require detailed local knowledge.
Intercity Buses
Scheduled coach services connect Kigali to all provincial capitals and major towns. The main operators including Volcano Express, Jaguar, and Ritco maintain reasonably consistent schedules from Kigali’s Nyabugogo bus station. Tickets are purchased at the station desk before departure. Seats are numbered and assigned. Luggage goes in the hold or overhead rack depending on size.

Minibus Taxis
Minibus taxis, called twegerane or sometimes simply taxis, cover routes that the larger buses do not serve or serve less frequently. They depart when full rather than on a schedule. For shorter routes between towns that are not major bus route endpoints, the minibus is often the only public transport option. The experience is considerably less comfortable than the larger buses due to higher passenger density and faster driving.
Minibus taxis require a degree of initiative in using. At the departure point, announce your destination and ask which vehicle is going there. Confirm the fare before boarding. Baggage goes on the roof or in the aisle at your feet. Minibuses stop on request along the route when a passenger wants to disembark. Alert the driver or conductor when approaching your stop. The system is informal but functional once the basic patterns are understood.
Urban Transport in Kigali
The Kigali Bus Service operates on fixed routes across the city on a card-payment system. Tap-on tap-off cards can be purchased at Kigali bus company offices. The fares are very low. The bus routes cover most of Kigali’s residential and commercial areas. Journey times vary significantly with traffic. Peak hour Kigali bus journeys can take twice the off-peak journey time on the same route.
App-based taxi services operate in Kigali and provide a more convenient alternative to bus travel for specific point-to-point journeys within the city.
