Mount Elgon Uganda: Trekking an Ancient Extinct Volcano

Mount Elgon Trek Routes
The Sasa River Trail is the most direct and popular route to the summit of Mount Elgon Uganda. This trail ascends steeply from Budadiri village on the mountain’s lower slopes. Reaching Wagagai Peak by the Sasa trail takes three to four days. The route passes through montane forest, bamboo, giant heather, and moorland before the crater rim. Crater views on a clear morning extend across the caldera and into the distant Kenyan highlands. The summit sunrise is one of eastern Uganda’s most memorable landscape moments.
The Piswa Trail is a longer, gentler route that traverses the mountain’s northern slopes. This trail takes four to five days and provides a more gradual ascent. The Piswa route passes through some of the most intact montane forest on the Uganda side. Wildlife sightings including elephant and buffalo are more likely along the Piswa trail. Both routes require Uganda Wildlife Authority guides booked in advance at Mbale or Budadiri. An operator handles bookings more reliably than independent arrangements for most visitors.
Mount Elgon National Park Fees
Mount Elgon Uganda entry fees follow Uganda Wildlife Authority national park schedule. International visitors pay a daily park entry fee of around 40 US dollars. Mandatory guide fees and porter fees add to the daily trekking cost. A three-day Mount Elgon trek with guide and porters costs 400 to 700 US dollars in total. This is significantly less expensive than the Rwenzori circuit for budget-conscious visitors. Camping fees apply at designated sites along each trekking route.

Mammals of Mount Elgon
Mount Elgon Uganda supports a healthy elephant population that roams the montane forest and visits salt caves. The Elgon elephants use cave-digging behaviour to access mineral salt deposits in the rock. Buffalo herds graze the moorland above the forest line and appear regularly near the crater rim. Black-and-white colobus monkeys inhabit the forest zone and are conspicuous from the trail. De Brazza’s monkey is a less commonly seen forest primate in the lower forest sections. Leopard inhabits the park but daytime sightings on the trek trail are rare.
African wild cat and serval occur in the moorland zones at higher elevations. Giant forest hog appears sometimes on early morning starts from lower campsites. The mountain’s mammal diversity is lower than Uganda’s western parks but provides satisfying encounters within a mountain context. Night walks near lower forest camps with a guide produce valuable nocturnal mammal sightings. Birds of Mount Elgon Uganda

Lammergeier soars over the upper mountain and draws birders who make the high-altitude effort specifically for this sighting. African hill babbler and Abyssinian ground thrush are common in the forest undergrowth at mid-altitude.
The crater moorland holds augur buzzard and African marsh harrier hunting over open grassland. Mountain buzzard and long-crested eagle perch regularly on exposed branches at forest edges.
