Long Rains: March to May
The long rains fall from March through May. Bwindi receives heavy afternoon showers during this period. Trails become muddy and slippery. Gorilla tracking success rates remain high — gorillas shelter under forest canopy and stay relatively accessible throughout this season.
Short Rains: October to November
The short rains arrive from October into November. This is a lighter rainy period than March to May. Afternoon showers are common but mornings are often clear. October and November are among the best value months for gorilla trekking in Uganda.
Advantages of Trekking in the Wet Season
Lower Costs and Better Availability
Some lodges reduce rates by 20 to 40 percent during low season. Permit availability is better across all Bwindi sectors. Flight prices and overall trip costs are typically lower. Last-minute bookings are more feasible in April and November.
Smaller Groups and Quieter Forests
Wet season groups are smaller than peak season. You spend your one-hour encounter with fewer people around. Rangers are more relaxed and engaged when managing smaller groups. The forest atmosphere is completely different from the busier dry season experience.
Challenges of Wet Season Trekking
Trail Conditions and Physical Difficulty
Muddy trails increase physical difficulty significantly. Steep slopes in Nkuringo and Ruhija sectors become particularly challenging when wet. Gaiters, trekking poles and proper hiking boots are essential. Expect to arrive at the trailhead knowing you will get dirty.
Photography in Wet Conditions
Overcast skies reduce light in the forest canopy. Protect camera equipment with rain covers and dry bags. Some photographers prefer wet season light as it reduces harsh shadows. Fast lenses with wide apertures work best in the dim forest interior.

Official Permit Cost and Process
Uganda Wildlife Authority charges $800 per person per gorilla trekking permit. We submit permit applications on your behalf directly through UWA. Your permit is confirmed in writing before any itinerary finalisation.
