Volcanoes National Park Rwanda: The Complete Gorilla Trekking Guide
Volcanoes National Park Rwanda gorilla trekking is one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife experiences. The park sits on the Rwandan slopes of the Virunga Massif and protects twelve habituated mountain gorilla families open to daily trekking. Understanding the park’s structure helps you plan the best possible experience.
The Gorilla Families of Volcanoes
How Many Families Are Available
Volcanoes National Park has twelve habituated gorilla families available for trekking as of 2026. Each family receives up to eight visitors per day. Permit availability changes seasonally — peak season from June through September fills months in advance. The Susa Group, Agashya and Umubano families are among the most well-known.
Which Family Will You See?
Rwanda Development Board assigns families to trekking groups on the morning of each trek. You cannot request a specific family in advance — assignment is based on group size, fitness level and daily ranger reports. Park rangers brief all trekking groups at the Kinigi headquarters before departure each morning.
Gorilla Trekking Permits for Rwanda
Standard Permit Cost
Standard Rwanda gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person in 2026 — nearly double Uganda’s $800 rate. The higher price reflects Rwanda’s premium positioning and helps fund conservation across the Virunga corridor. All permit revenue goes to Rwanda Development Board and flows into national park management and community programs.
Platinum Experience Permits
The Platinum Gorilla Experience permits cost $1,500 extra on top of the standard fee and allow extended time with the gorilla family beyond the standard one hour. This experience is highly limited and sells out far in advance. African Wild Trekkers secures both standard and Platinum permits on request.
Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes
Rwanda’s Second Habituated Primate Experience
Volcanoes National Park offers golden monkey trekking alongside gorilla encounters. Two habituated golden monkey groups live in the bamboo forests at the park’s lower elevation zones. Golden monkey permits cost $100 per person and trekking groups are limited to eight visitors. The vivid orange-gold colouring of these Albertine Rift endemics makes them exceptionally photogenic.
Combining Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking
Many visitors combine gorilla trekking on day one with golden monkey trekking on day two in Volcanoes. The two activities use different trailheads and different elevation zones within the same park. African Wild Trekkers arranges both permits and coordinates lodge nights to make the combined experience logistically seamless.
Getting to Volcanoes National Park
From Kigali to Musanze
Kigali International Airport to Kinigi park headquarters takes approximately two and a half hours by road via Musanze. The road passes through Ruhengeri town and climbs through tea estates before reaching the park entrance. African Wild Trekkers provides private vehicle transfers from Kigali airport directly to your Volcanoes lodge.
Best Time to Visit
Gorilla trekking at Volcanoes is available year-round. June through September are the driest months with the most reliable trail conditions. December through February offers a shorter dry window. March through May and October through November bring heavier rainfall, muddier trails and lower visitor numbers at lower accommodation rates.
