Akagera National Park Rwanda: Africa’s Most Remarkable Conservation Comeback

Akagera National Park Rwanda Big Five safari offers something genuinely rare — a conservation success story you can visit and witness directly. African Parks took over management in 2010 when the park held no lions and no rhinos. Today Akagera supports lions, black rhinos, elephants, leopards and buffalos across 1,122 square kilometres of savanna, woodland and lake systems.

Wildlife in Akagera National Park

Lions and Black Rhinos

Seven lions were reintroduced from South Africa in 2015. The pride has grown to over 50 animals across multiple prides. Black rhinos — critically endangered with fewer than 6,000 remaining in Africa — were reintroduced in 2017 and 2021. Rhino tracking on foot with armed rangers is one of Akagera’s most thrilling activities.

Elephants, Hippos and Savanna Species

Akagera has a large resident elephant population with herds commonly seen near the lake systems at dawn and dusk. The Akagera River and its associated lakes hold massive hippo pods — the boat safari from the Akagera River estuary delivers exceptionally close hippo, crocodile and waterbird encounters. Giraffes, zebras, topis and various antelope complete the savanna wildlife picture.

Activities in Akagera

Game Drives

Morning and evening game drives cover both the northern and southern park circuits. The northern circuit around Lake Rwanyakazinga is best for large mammal sightings. The central wetland areas deliver waterbirds and hippos. Night game drives are offered by specific lodges and reveal servals, civets and other nocturnal species.

Boat Safari on the Akagera River

The Akagera boat safari is one of Rwanda’s finest wildlife experiences. Two-hour morning boat trips depart from the park’s main jetty. Hippo pods line the river banks at distances of less than 10 metres. Nile crocodiles bask on mud banks throughout. Shoebill storks, goliath herons and African fish eagles complete an extraordinary waterway experience.

Getting to Akagera and Accommodation

Location and Access

Akagera National Park sits three hours east of Kigali on Rwanda’s Tanzania border. The road from Kigali passes through Rwamagana and enters the park through the southern gate. The park road network is well maintained by African Parks standards. African Wild Trekkers provides private vehicle transfers from Kigali on all Akagera itineraries.

Lodge Options

Ruzizi Tented Lodge and Akagera Game Lodge are the two main accommodation options within the park. Both are operated by African Parks and provide full-board meals, guided activities and excellent wildlife viewing directly from lodge grounds. AndBeyond Vira Vira represents the premium tier option at the park’s southern sector.

Combining Akagera With Volcanoes

The Rwanda Complete Safari Circuit

A Rwanda safari combining Akagera, Kigali and Volcanoes National Park delivers both savanna big game and mountain gorilla trekking in one country trip. The circuit takes a minimum of five to six days. African Wild Trekkers builds this combination as part of multi-country East Africa itineraries including Uganda and Kenya extensions.

Akagera Plus Nyungwe Forest

Adding Nyungwe Forest to an Akagera visit completes Rwanda’s wildlife diversity in one itinerary. Nyungwe delivers chimpanzee trekking, colobus monkey groups and the famous canopy walk above the rainforest canopy. African Wild Trekkers can build a 7 to 10-day Rwanda circuit covering all three major wildlife destinations.
