Golden Monkey Trekking Rwanda 2026: The Complete Guide

Golden monkey trekking Rwanda 2026 is one of Africa’s most underrated wildlife experiences. These brilliantly coloured Albertine Rift endemic primates live exclusively in the bamboo forests of the Virunga Massif. Volcanoes National Park has two habituated golden monkey groups available for daily trekking visits.

About Golden Monkeys

What Makes Golden Monkeys Unique

Golden monkeys are subspecies of the blue monkey found only in the bamboo forest zones of Uganda, Rwanda and DRC’s Virunga volcanoes. Their vivid orange-gold mantle set against black limbs and face makes them exceptionally striking animals. Adults weigh 4 to 7 kilograms and live in social groups of 30 to 80 individuals.

Their Bamboo Habitat

Golden monkeys depend almost entirely on bamboo. They feed on bamboo shoots, leaves and stems supplemented by fruit and insects. The bamboo zone in Volcanoes National Park sits between 2,500 and 3,000 metres elevation — cooler and mistier than the gorilla sectors below. Bring an extra layer for the morning briefing at this altitude.

Golden Monkey Trekking Permits

Permit Cost and Availability

Golden monkey trekking permits cost $100 per person in Rwanda. Groups are limited to eight visitors per habituated community. Two groups trek each morning, one per habituated community. Permit availability is better than gorilla permits — two to four weeks’ advance booking is usually sufficient outside peak season months.

How to Book Your Permit

African Wild Trekkers submits your golden monkey permit application to Rwanda Development Board on your behalf. The permit is secured with your safari deposit and issued in your name before departure. We coordinate your permit date with your lodge booking and gorilla trekking day to create a coherent itinerary without logistical gaps.

What to Expect on the Trek

Trek Duration and Difficulty

Golden monkey treks begin at 7am from the Volcanoes park headquarters in Kinigi. Trek duration to the habituated groups varies from 30 minutes to two hours depending on monkey movements. The bamboo forest terrain is less steep than gorilla sectors — this is generally considered easier than gorilla trekking. Most visitors of moderate fitness complete the trek without difficulty.

The Encounter Itself

One hour with the golden monkeys begins when the lead ranger determines you are close enough. Groups of 30 to 60 individuals move through bamboo with extraordinary speed and agility. The canopy above fills with black-and-gold movement. Young monkeys chase each other through the bamboo while adults forage at ground level. Photography opportunities are excellent in the morning light filtering through the bamboo.

Combining Golden Monkey and Gorilla Trekking

The Two-Day Volcanoes Primate Combination

Most visitors to Volcanoes National Park combine gorilla trekking on day one with golden monkey trekking on day two. Both activities depart from the same park headquarters. The same lodge serves both days comfortably. African Wild Trekkers builds this two-day combination as the standard minimum Volcanoes itinerary in all Rwanda packages.

Adding Uganda to the Equation

Visitors who cross from Rwanda into Uganda can add chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest to their primate experience. A Uganda-Rwanda primate safari combining gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking and chimpanzee tracking covers three distinct great ape and Old World monkey species across two countries in one itinerary. African Wild Trekkers builds this circuit from either direction on request.
