Lake Kivu Rwanda: Africa’s Most Beautiful Freshwater Lake
Lake Kivu Rwanda beaches kayaking and island exploration make this one of East Africa’s most pleasant safari add-ons. Lake Kivu sits on the DRC border at 1,460 metres elevation and stretches 90 kilometres north to south. The lake’s warmth, clarity and mountain backdrop set it apart from other East African Rift Valley lakes.
Activities on Lake Kivu
Kayaking and Boat Trips
Lake Kivu is best explored by water. Guided kayak tours depart from Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north and Rusizi (Cyangugu) in the south. Half-day island kayaking trips visit the Napoleon Island bat colony — over 100,000 straw-coloured fruit bats roost here and produce a spectacular evening exodus. Full-day motorboat trips visit multiple islands and include swimming stops.
Swimming and Beach Days
Lake Kivu is safe to swim in — unlike some Rift Valley lakes affected by bilharzia. The freshwater temperature stays around 23 to 25 degrees Celsius year-round. Rubavu has the most developed beach area with sun loungers and restaurant facilities. The Serena Hotel beach in Rubavu is open to day visitors for a fee and offers the best swimming and lake views.
Towns Along Lake Kivu
Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the North
Rubavu is the most visited town on Lake Kivu and sits on Rwanda’s border with Goma, DRC. The town combines a relaxed beach atmosphere with easy access to the Virunga volcanoes visible across the water. Rubavu is a natural stopover for visitors combining gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park with a lake rest day. The drive from Musanze to Rubavu takes one hour.
Karongi (Kibuye) in the Centre
Karongi sits on a peninsula jutting into Lake Kivu’s most island-dense section. The town is quieter and more local than Rubavu. Island boat trips from Karongi reach the Napoleon bat island, Amahoro Island and several smaller uninhabited islands. The Home St Jean guesthouse provides simple but well-located lake accommodation at budget prices.
Combining Lake Kivu With Your Rwanda Itinerary
Lake Kivu After Gorilla Trekking
The standard Rwanda 7-day itinerary combines two nights at Volcanoes National Park with two nights at Lake Kivu before returning to Kigali. The drive from Musanze to Rubavu takes one hour through tea estate highlands. A lake rest day between active trekking days prevents safari fatigue and provides genuinely spectacular scenery.
Lake Kivu en Route to Nyungwe
Visitors continuing south from Lake Kivu to Nyungwe Forest National Park follow the Congo Nile Trail road along the full western shore. The road passes through coffee growing highlands, fishing villages and dramatic lake viewpoints. African Wild Trekkers builds Lake Kivu stopovers into all Rwanda itineraries that include Nyungwe Forest.
