Rwanda Southern Circuit: Nyungwe, Lake Kivu, and the Southwest in One Safari

The Rwanda southern circuit connects the most important natural, cultural, and historical sites of southern and western Rwanda in a single coherent itinerary. The circuit typically runs from Kigali southward to Huye, then west to Nyungwe Forest, then north along the Lake Kivu shore to Musanze, before returning to Kigali. This route covers the country’s most diverse landscapes and experiences in a sequence that builds naturally from one stop to the next.

The southern circuit complements the northern gorilla circuit rather than competing with it. Combining both circuits gives visitors the fullest possible engagement with Rwanda’s diversity. The southern circuit is less visited than the northern gorilla route. Its relative quietness compared to the gorilla permit queue is part of its appeal for visitors who want to explore beyond the main tourist path.

Nyungwe Forest

Nyungwe Forest is the southern circuit’s core wildlife experience. The forest covers more than 1,000 square kilometres of ancient mountain rainforest at elevations of 1,600 to 2,950 metres. Habituated chimpanzee tracking, Angola colobus monkey troops, the canopy walkway, and exceptional birding define the Nyungwe experience.

Two to three nights at Nyungwe allows time for chimpanzee tracking on the first morning, the canopy walkway and a primate trail on the second day, and a birding trail on the third morning before continuing the circuit. That pace gives the forest the time it deserves without rushing between experiences that reward patient exploration.

The Gisakura tea estate adjacent to the park entrance adds a tea farm visit to the Nyungwe stay. The estate is one of Rwanda’s most organised for visitor tours. Combining a Gisakura tea tour with the Nyungwe forest activities creates a rich combination of natural and agricultural experiences within the same geographic area.

Lake Kivu

The drive from Nyungwe to Lake Kivu on the Congo Nile Trail is one of Rwanda’s most spectacular road journeys. The trail climbs through forested ridges and descends steeply to the lake shore. Views of Lake Kivu from the ridge road above Cyangugu are among the most dramatic lake panoramas in Central Africa.

Lake Kivu offers kayaking, island excursions, fishing village visits, and beach relaxation in a setting defined by the deep blue of the lake and the green hillsides rising from the water in every direction. Gisenyi in the north and Rusizi in the south are the two main lake towns. The journey between them by road or boat encompasses the full length of Rwanda’s lake shore.

The methane extraction operation on Lake Kivu is one of the most unusual industrial attractions in African tourism. The lake’s deep water holds an enormous dissolved methane deposit created by volcanic activity. Rwanda has developed a methane extraction and power generation program unique in the world. The Kivu Watt facility near Gisenyi can be visited with advance arrangement for engineering or energy sector visitors with a specific interest in the project.

Huye and the Cultural Sites

Huye at the start of the southern circuit provides the most important cultural grounding for the journey ahead. The National Museum presents Rwandan cultural history comprehensively. The genocide memorial sites in the surrounding Bugesera district provide the historical context for understanding Rwanda’s reconstruction. Two to three hours at the museum followed by a Nyungwe drive the same afternoon makes efficient use of the first day of the southern circuit.

The Murambi Genocide Memorial near Nyamagabe lies directly on the road between Huye and Nyungwe. A morning memorial visit before the afternoon drive into the forest creates one of the most emotionally complex and intellectually rich single travel days in the entire Rwanda safari circuit.

Plan Your Southern Circuit Safari

A complete Rwanda southern circuit requires five to seven days to do properly. That time allows Huye museum and memorial, two to three nights in Nyungwe, two nights on Lake Kivu, and the return drive through the volcanic scenery of the west. The southern circuit alone justifies a Rwanda trip. Combined with the northern gorilla circuit it creates one of Africa’s most complete and rewarding safari experiences.

African Wild Trekkers designs the complete Rwanda safari circuit combining both northern and southern routes in a single well-paced itinerary.
